Making room at the Peace Centre for our darkest secrets with The Playpan

As one of Singapore’s oldest surviving malls, the Peace Centre has witnessed everything from bad bargains to black magic. Once dubbed the KTV Capital of Singapore, its walls were inbued with almost 47 years of untold vices and hushed secrets. Upon learning of the mall’s imminent closure, we were inspired to commemorate its storied past.

We wanted to let the ghost of people’s past haunt the nooks of the Peace Centre one last time. We envisioned a space that allowed visitors to pen down their deepest darkest secrets - only for it to vanish with the building into the debris of history.

Stumbling upon this dusty corner in the mall, we were captivated by the graffiti. We knew we wanted them for our installation. But attracting visitors would require some extra effort. Here's what we came up with…

By incorporating the existing visuals and paying homage to the mall’s chequered past - Secrets I’ll Never Say became a placemaking initiative that struck a chord with the youthful masses who visited the Peace Centre during its final days.

Our creative process came full circle when the mural artist Amy (@amyong.happyspeck) noticed her art being featured in our installation. From one creative to another, it warmed our hearts knowing how we inspired each other.
