Reimagining the Chinese Singaporean Experience for Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre

‘Old’, ‘traditional’ and ‘superstitious’ were some of the words youth used to describe Chinese Singaporean culture. With Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), we created an experience that helped people from all walks of life appreciate Chinese Singaporean culture as a part of their everyday lives.

The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover everyday culture as they have never before. With an RFID wristband, visitors interact with the gallery to discover the influence of Chinese Singaporean culture in their very own lives. At the end of the journey, personalised recommendations are generated, taking visitors to where Chinese Singaporean culture really is – beyond SCCC’s gallery walls.

ZONE 1: What makes us, us?

The gallery invites visitors to register their RFID bands sending them on a journey of personal rediscovery starting with the historical origins of Chinese Singaporeans.

Materials like jute fabric and rusted patina alongside motifs like Chinese clan pillars and modernised shophouse signage pay homage to early Chinese migrants.

ZONE 2: BEYOND GENERATIONS

A room made of old doors and letterboxes salvaged from a public residence built during Singapore’s early independence, the zone preserves 60s Singapore with a surrealist touch and invites exploration of culture through the values and festivals we share.

ZONE 3: WHEN CULTURES MEET

To convey how different cultures come together to create a truly Singaporean identity, we created experiential spaces based on places where different races mingle – the playground and hawker table.

ZONE 4: MADE IN SINGAPORE

A wall of glass brick invites visitors into a ‘shopping street’ that puts Chinese Singaporean culture’s best creative talents
on display.

ZONE 5: MAKING OUR MARK

The future is a blank canvas for all within this white and metallic space. Chinese Singaporean exports rove overhead on a conveyor system across sprawling contextual projections.

Concluding their journey, visitors tap their wristband one last time to generate a personalised report with recommendations to experience Chinese Singaporean culture beyond the gallery walls.
